Gor Mahia find themselves deep in title race contention for the FKF Premier League and latter stages of the FKF Cup.

Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has opened up about how their 4-0 thumping of Mara Sugar on Sunday at the Dandora Stadium has changed their trajectory amid a heated race for the FKF Premier League title.

The defending champions face stiff competition to retain their title by securing a record-extending 22nd championship.

K’Ogalo, who currently place third on the log behind Tusker and Kenya Police, suffered a bump to their title aspirations in the last couple of weeks.

A 1-1 draw against Sofapaka and a 1-0 loss to Talanta in back-to-back games saw the Sinisa Mihic-coached side fail to capitalize on their game in hand, losing their advantage in the title race.

However, Odhiambo asserts that their 4-0 win over Mara Sugar in their previous league outing has provided the team with much-needed morale to oversee the latter stages of the title race.

Speaking ahead of their FKF Cup clash with Kariobangi Sharks—which they won 2-0 to progress to the semi-finals—the midfielder emphasized the importance of that win for both their title and FKF Cup aspirations.

"Right now, I think the team is full of morale. We had gone three games without a win. The fact that we got a win over the weekend elevated the team,” said Odhiambo.

“I think it came at the right time because we finally got the result we wanted, which was winning by a big margin,” he added.

The upturn in form comes at a crucial time for Gor Mahia, who have an all-important Nyanza Derby clash against Shabana on Sunday.

Odhiambo has revealed the mentality that will help them overcome their remaining opponents in an attempt to claim a domestic double.

“I think we have to approach every game with a winning mentality. We have to believe that we can win every game and win the title and the cup,” he said.

The record champions travel to Gusii Stadium hoping to thwart the Glamour Boys, who have also found themselves in surprise title contention following a resurgence under coach Peter Okidi.

The two Nyanza-based clubs played to a 1-1 draw in their first-leg encounter earlier in the season.

A win for either side will further their title aspirations against Kenya Police and Tusker, who are ahead of both.
