Were, competing in Heat Two, started off the race at a slower pace and struggled to maintain the pace with his opponents.

National champion Wiseman Were has ended his World Championships campaign after failing to reach the final of the 400m Hurdles.

Were, competing in Heat Two, started off the race at a slower pace and struggled to maintain the pace with his opponents. He ended up finishing distant sixth in 49.40. USA’s Rai Benjamin carried the day in the Heat, crossing the line first in 47.24.

Only the first two athletes in every heat are to directly qualify for the final. Also, the two fastest losers will also qualify for the final but Were's time was not sufficient for a slot in the final.

Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos finished second in 47.38 as France’s Ludvy Vaillant completed the podium in the hotly contested race.

Heat One was won by Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands who crossed the line in 47.72 ahead of Estonia’s Rasmus Magi who clocked 48.30. USA’s CJ Allen completed the podium in 48.44.

Heat Three was the fastest of the three with Norway's Karsten Warholm reigning supreme in 47.09. Jamaica's wonder kid Roshawn Clarke and USA's Trevor Bassit finished second and third in respective times of 47.34 and 47.38 to also qualify.

Meanwhile, during the Preliminary round on Sunday, August 20, Were qualified for the semi-final after displaying a good show to finish fourth.

He was competing in Heat Two and managed to cross the line in 49.10. McMaster carried the day in the second Heat as he won in 48.47. Magi and USA’s Trevor Bassit finished second and third in respective times of 48.58 and 48.73.
