Rai Benjamin was beaten by his long-time rival Karsten Warholm in his first outdoor race of the season in Norway on Thursday.

Reigning 400 meter hurdles Olympic champion Rai Benjamin has explained why he is not too worried about his losing start to the season to great rival Karsten Warholm in the 300 meter hurdles event that took place at the Oslo Diamond League in Norway on Thursday evening.

The highly anticipated race lived up to expectations, with Warholm clocking a world-best time of 32.67 to claim the win. Benjamin followed closely with a personal best of 33.22, finishing second, while Olympic bronze medalist Alison Dos Santos took third in 33.88.

Warholm powered to an early lead off the blocks, but Benjamin appeared to take control at the turn. Moments later, however, Warholm surged back with a trademark closing burst to overtake the American in the final stretch.

The Norwegian celebrated in trademark fashion—briefly removing his shirt and slapping his chest as the scoreboard confirmed his record-setting run.

Speaking to Citius Mag after the race, Benjamin broke down what went wrong and why he remains confident moving forward.

"I probably should’ve run a different race strategy, but I felt confident—I felt good—so I went for it," Benjamin said. "It’s just the first one of the year, and I’m a little rusty, so I can’t be too upset about it. Of course, you always want to come out and win, but this was about shaking off the rust. We’ve got more races on the schedule, so it’s just the beginning."

5 Most Beautiful CHAN 2024 Stadiums

CHAN 2024 will showcase East Africa’s top stadiums, with a stunning lineup of upgraded, beautiful, and high-capacity venues across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Benjamin emphasized that while the 300m hurdles provided a competitive challenge, it’s not the priority this season.

"I think I just needed to feel things out as I went. We did prepare for it, but didn’t go overboard, because it’s not the main focus this year," he said.

"We’re not running the 300 hurdles at the World Championships—it’s all about the 400 hurdles. So most of our preparation has been centered around that."

Despite the loss, Benjamin reaffirmed that the early part of the season is about fine-tuning and staying sharp ahead of the World Championships.

"I’m definitely still going to race. There’s a good amount of time between the Diamond League Final and the start of Worlds, so I don’t want to sit out too long," he explained.

"We're staying flexible with the schedule, making sure everything is planned in a way that keeps me healthy and ensures I'm peaking at the right time.

"This first half of the season is about racing, making mistakes, and learning from them so we can fix things early. My first 400 hurdles race is coming up Sunday, and honestly, I was just getting a bit bored at home—so I had to come out and compete."
