Faith Kipyegon is preparing to do what no woman has ever done by running a mile under four minutes as she is banking on special speed gear from Nike.
Faith Kipyegon, one of history's most accomplished middle-distance runners, aims to break the seemingly insurmountable 4-minute mile barrier.
Nike has harnessed its sports science and design expertise to create an integrated speed system to help her achieve this legendary goal.
This includes a first-of-its-kind speed suit, a revolutionary 3D-printed sports bra, and a featherweight spike packed with innovative features.

Nike understands that success in the mile comes down to split-second decisions. Similarly, the Breaking4 kit is designed to work as a cohesive unit, helping Kipyegon, the current women's world record holder at 4:07.64, shave off those crucial 7.65 seconds.

Hellen Obiri: Why Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet Are Kenya's Record-Breaking Powerhouses
Hellen Obiri believes Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet are on the verge of extraordinary achievements for Kenya.
"The integrative nature of this kit is paramount. No single element alone will break the barrier," says Brett Kirby, Principal Researcher at the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL).
The Nike Fly Suit
)
Nike designers set out to create the most aerodynamic running suit ever. Building on past successes like Cathy Freeman's bodysuit and Eliud Kipchoge's Breaking2 tights, they recognized the crucial role of aerodynamics. At full sprint, Kipyegon reaches 15 miles per hour, battling air resistance and drag-inducing eddies.
The Nike Fly Suit, a one-piece design with a matching headband and arm and leg sleeves, utilizes sleek, stretchy materials to minimize air resistance. Lighter materials are strategically used on the extremities to conserve energy, recognizing the varying impact of aerodynamics across the body.
The suit's key innovation is the Nike Aeronodes, tiny half-spheres strategically placed to split the air in front of Kipyegon and create smaller eddies behind her, reducing drag.
Lisa Gibson, Senior Project Manager for Apparel Innovation, explains that the Aeronodes keep the airflow "attached" to Kipyegon's body, preventing turbulent drag.

Ferdinand Omanyala, Noah Lyles and Letsile Tebogo Warned Against Promising Too Much Ahead of Major Championships
The world’s top athletes have been advised to be wary of the risk of employing a strategy where they promise a medal or record ahead of a major track event.
While adding elements might seem counterintuitive for speed, the project's focus on incremental gains led to challenging assumptions. "We always start by challenging assumptions about athlete performance," says Gibson. Rigorous testing, from digital wind simulations to wind tunnel tests and on-track trials, validated the Aeronodes' effectiveness.
Amy Jones Vaterlaus, VP of Innovation at NSRL, emphasizes the importance of athlete feedback: "The balance between the suit's benefits and its familiarity for Faith was crucial."
The Nike Flyweb Bra
)
Traditional sports bras can hinder performance due to moisture retention and added thermal burden. The Breaking4 team addressed this by creating a one-of-a-kind bra using Nike FlyWeb, a 3D-printed TPU material optimized for moisture management. The racerback design enhances range of motion, while the computationally designed form provides dynamic support.
Janett Nichol, VP of Nike Apparel Innovation, describes the bra as a groundbreaking innovation: "The material is soft, light, and incredibly supportive — yet it feels like you’re not wearing anything at all."

Faith Kipyegon Reveals Inspiration For Historic Sub-Four Minute Mile Attempt
Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon has opened up on her inspiration to attempt a historic sub-four-minute mile in 2025.
The Nike Victory Elite FK
)
Building on Kipyegon's success with the Nike Victory 2, the footwear team developed the Nike Victory Elite FK, a custom-made spike designed for lightness, propulsion, and speed. Carrie Dimoff, Footwear Product Director at Nike Innovation, highlights the spike's role in energy preservation and efficiency.
The Victory Elite FK features a taller Zoom Air unit for improved efficiency, customized titanium spikes for enhanced traction and reduced weight, and a bespoke Flyknit upper that is 60% lighter than the Victory 2. Every detail, including Kipyegon's preference for a wider forefoot, was considered.
The Athlete
)
Ultimately, the most crucial element of Breaking4 is Kipyegon herself. The Nike products are designed to serve her, empowering her with confidence and preparing her for this historic attempt. "Faith brings a spirit of connection, enabling everyone to achieve new heights. When she suits up, we'll all be there alongside her," says Kirby.
