Kipruto’s last race was during last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where he finished sixth in 8:34.96.

Two-time world 3000m Steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto will open his season at the Diamond League Meeting in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday, May 28.

Kipruto’s last race was during last year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where he finished sixth in 8:34.96. Kipruto did not have quite an impressive season last year after failing to defend his title at the World Championships.

In a long post on his Instagram, he explained that he was going through physical and mental challenges but he promised to be back stronger and this could just be the year.

“I have had it tough and there were many moments I struggled with my fitness and mentally…It’s good to know I am still relevant and it’s good to know that gold is still within reach. Just be warned, I am on the way back,” the post read in part.

He is now set to step foot on the track and compete against a deep field that has also attracted arch-rival Soufiane El Bakkali, the reigning world champion.

Kipruto, the 2016 Olympic champion, will be lining up with a Personal Best time of 8:00.12, the fastest in the field.

He will enjoy the company of compatriots Leonard Bett, Abraham Kibiwott, and Benjamin Kigen who will also be seeking to prove a point in the event. Others include Wilberforce Kones and the 2021 World Under-20 3000m SC Amos Serem.

The toughest opposition will come from Bakkali and the Ethiopian duo of Hailemariyam Amare and Getnet Wale. Bakkali opened his season at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar where he finished fourth in the 3000m race.

Amare opened his season with a ninth-place finish at the World Cross-country Championships in Bathurst, Australia. On his part, Wale finished second in the senior men’s race at the same event before finishing sixth at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar.
