World 3000m Steeple Chase record holder Beatrice Chepkoech wants to reclaim the world title Kenya lost to Kazakhstani’s Norah Jeruto during last year’s World Championships in Oregon.

However, Jeruto has since been was provisionally suspended in a doping case involving her biological passport. During last year’s event, no Kenyan made it to the podium as the Ethiopian duo of Werkuha Getachew and Mekides Abebe took the second and third places respectively.

Chepkoech, who won the 2019 title in a time of 8:57.84, unfortunately missed last year’s event due to an injury, revealed that she was disappointed by the fact that Kenya lost the title.

“I am still pained by the fact that we lost the title during last year’s edition…that’s why I want to work hard and ensure I bring the glory back to Kenya when we go to Budapest,” she said.

Chepkoech kickstarted her campaign with a win at the second Athletics Kenya meet before going to the 10km Port Gentil where she also won. She then came back to the country and competed in the 5000m race where she won.

Her first loss was during the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, Qatar where she settled for fourth place in 9:06.90. She went back to the drawing board and came back to secure a dominant win at the just-concluded Kip Keino Classic.

“I have now come back officially. In Doha, I was afraid to kick and that’s why I finished fourth but I’m happy to have won this one (Kip Keino),” she said.

She added that her next assignment is at the Diamond League Meeting in Florence scheduled for June 2.
