Mary Moraa has disclosed the races she will compete in at the upcoming African Games after a great start to the trials.

World 800m champion Mary Moraa has decided on the discipline she will compete in at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Moraa, the Commonwealth Games 800m champion, proved to be in great shape after cruising to the finish line of the 400m semifinal and she will be hoping to impress in the final of the race.

She clocked an impressive 51.47 to cross the finish line first ahead of Jackline Nanjala of the Ndura Athletics Camp and Veronica Mutua, also from the National Police Service, just like Moraa.

After the race, Moraa expressed her interest in competing in the 400m, explaining that if she got a chance, she would also compete in the 4x400m women’s relay.

“I will be running the 400m and maybe if the relays will be included I will certainly double,” Kisii Express said in a post-race interview.

Meanwhile, Moraa led a protest of athletes on Tuesday morning, demanding answers as to why Athletics Kenya would send only one athlete from each discipline to the continental showpiece.

The Kenya National Sports Council had directed AK to only field 30 athletes due to financial constraints that the organisation is facing.

“We need to accept what happened and continue with the competition because it was not our fault as athletes. So, we need to focus,” she commented on the incident.

Concerning the issue, the government bowed to the pressure from athletes and increased the number of slots for athletes at the event.

"We are pleased to note that following AK's consultation with the Ministry of Youth Affairs Creative Economy and Sports, the number of slots available shall be increased subject to the athletes meeting the qualification criteria for the games.

“AK technical team will work closely with the athletes during the trials to achieve the objective of selecting team Kenya as required,” part of a statement from AK read.
