American sprint legend stirs controversy with startling claims avout the 100mH.
American sprint legend Justin Gatlin has ignited a fresh debate in track and field, asserting that the women’s 100 meters hurdles is the most competitive event in the sport today.
The former Olympic champion made his case on his Ready Set Go podcast, pointing to the depth of talent in the discipline and the razor-thin margins separating victors from the rest of the field.
Gatlin’s remarks come in the wake of Masai Russell’s Olympic triumph in Paris last year, where she edged out Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and France’s Cyréna Samba-Mayela for the gold.
However, Russell found it difficult to sustain her form throughout the rest of the 2024 season, ultimately ceding the Diamond League title to Camacho-Quinn in Brussels last September.

The sheer competitiveness of the event was evident in 2024, as an astounding 114 women clocked sub-13-second times.
“I have been saying it every episode—the women’s 100m hurdles is the most competitive event there is because every athlete has some kind of world credential under their belt,” Gatlin declared.
“It’s either a previous world champion, a former Olympic gold medalist, a former world record holder, or the current world record holder. They all bring something to the table to prove their greatness.”
Gatlin emphasized the intensity of the event, noting, “You have to bring your A-game. Those girls are built for battle.”

Usain Bolt spearheaded Jamaica's most successful history in the sprints in track and field.
Gatlin also praised Russell for her determination to improve following her Olympic success. The American hurdler started the 2025 season on a high, securing victory in the 60m hurdles at the New Balance Grand Prix earlier this month with a time of 7.80 seconds.
“What I love about Masai Russell is that I see a bit of déjà vu in her story,” Gatlin remarked.
“She won the Olympic gold early in her career—this is only her sophomore year. I won my Olympic gold in my sophomore year too, and I know that feeling.
“ You work so hard thinking it’ll take you four years, and then you achieve it in just two. You’re left wondering, ‘What do I do now?’”

Gatlin explained that many athletes struggle with this reality, often experiencing what he called ‘Olympic blues.’
“Some take years to rediscover themselves, while others, like Masai, realize that the next step is perfecting their craft, refining their strategy, and becoming the best athlete they can be. She’s in a great position, and now it’s about taking on the responsibility of pushing her own limits.”
Russell herself has openly discussed the grueling nature of the 100m hurdles. Last September, she addressed the difficulties she faced post-Olympics and reinforced Gatlin’s claims about the event’s unforgiving nature.
“The sprint events are always so close, separated by hundredths of a second, so it’s always going to be a race,” Russell stated. “The women’s 100m hurdles is the most difficult race. I just had the best, cleanest race on that day. No one can ever take my Olympic title away from me.”
She also highlighted the remarkable depth in the field, adding, “I think 13 women ran 12.3 seconds last year, and I don’t think that’s ever been done in history.”
Gatlin’s claims are sure to spark debate, but given the relentless competition in the women’s 100m hurdles, his argument is difficult to dismiss. With Russell already making an early statement in 2025, all eyes will be on whether she can maintain her edge in a field stacked with elite contenders.
