RUGBY Trouble at KRU as chairman Sasha Mutai blames ‘cartels’ for disrupting his tenure

Kenya Rugby Union boss Sasha Mutai has accused rogue elements within the sport for planning to disrupt his tenure amid an imminent no confidence motion in him.

Trouble is brewing within Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) with chairman Sasha Mutai facing a revolt among some of the union’s members.

Heading into this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 24, Mutai is faced with a no confidence motion from a section of KRU members whom he has termed as ‘cartels’ fighting back because he stopped them from benefiting from the game.

It is not the first anniversary Mutai was hoping to celebrate after his election as KRU chairman on March 29 last year with the promise of cleaning the game whose standards had dwindled, leading to the relegation of Kenya Sevens, for the first time in 19 years.

At the centre of his woes is the suspension of KRU secretary general Ray Olendo over allegations of presenting a forged Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) certificate in August last year.

Olendo’s suspension was, however, overturned by the Sports Disputes Tribunal last week after the John Ohaga-led team ruled that it was null and void. Mutai accuses Olendo of being behind the boardroom woes currently disrupting his rein.

“Cartels are fighting back because they are no longer part of the gravy train,” Mutai told Pulse Sports.

“The secretary is fighting for survival and using proxies but this will not work under my watch. This will be fixed in the next week because we need stability.”

Kisumu RFC and Bungoma RFC have already brought up motions of no confidence in Mutai, which they want discussed at the AGM, after accusing him of lack of transparency.

“During his campaigns and as part of his manifesto, Mutai promised to resource clubs to make them effectively paricapate in the leagues. Since he assumed office, there hasn’t been any payments to the clubs as a support subsidy,” said Kisumu in their motion, as per Nation Sport.

Mutai fears the wrangling will derail the progress he has made, especially on the national teams, while also scare off potential sponsors when he had started wooing them back.
