The National Sevens Series is promising fireworks as Kenya Harlequins eye title defence.

Kenya Harlequins head coach Patrice Agunda has declared his team ready to defend their National Sevens Series title.

The series kicks off with the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa on July 26-27.

Speaking on Friday, Agunda expressed satisfaction with retaining the core of last season's championship squad.

"We're delighted that we didn't lose any players during the transfer windows," he noted as quoted by The Star.

"This provides a strong foundation and allows us to integrate some of our younger players."

The Quins began their sevens preparations in May, giving them eight weeks of pre-season training.

Agunda believes this extended period has adequately prepared them for the demands of the fast-paced game.

"We started earlier than usual. Our preparations focused on strength and conditioning, as well as honing our skills."

Before the series begins, the Quins will participate in the Ruff 'n' Tuff Sevens tournament hosted by Nondies on July 12-13.

Agunda sees this as a crucial test, stating, "This tournament will give us a clear picture of where we stand," he observed. "It's our only pre-season competition, so we must maximize the opportunity to identify our strengths and weaknesses."

The former Shujaa and Kenya Simbas international anticipates a challenging six weeks of competition.

"As defending champions, we're the team everyone wants to beat. Sevens is unpredictable; a bad bounce or a misplaced pass can change everything," Agunda acknowledged.

Agunda will rely on playmakers like Lucky Dewald, Amon Wamalwa, Jan Remke, Richel Wangila, Wiseman Aganya, and veteran Herman Humwa to lead the charge.

Following the Driftwood Sevens, the series moves to Nakuru for the Prinsloo Sevens on August 2-3.
