Kenya's Lionesses will be aiming for victory in the Challenger Series after an impressive run in Dubai.

National women’s sevens team, Lionesses, have been drawn in a tricky pool ahead of the second HSBC Challenger Series slated for Montevideo, Uruguay from 8-10 March.

The Lionesses have been drawn in Pool B, a competitive grouping that includes Belgium, Papua New Guinea, and Hong Kong China.

In Pool A, the Dubai champions China, along with Poland, Czech Republic, and Paraguay, will be vying for supremacy. Meanwhile, Pool C will feature the bronze medallists from Dubai, Argentina, facing Uganda, Thailand, and Mexico.

The performance of China in Dubai was nothing short of dominant, as they clinched gold with a 19-5 victory over Kenya in a gripping final. This win was a significant turnaround, as Kenya had previously triumphed over China with a 17-12 score in a pool match.

China's journey to the final was marked by a commanding 45-5 win over Uganda in the semi-finals.

On the other side, Kenya's path to the final was secured with a convincing 17-0 victory against Argentina.

The Argentine team, impressive in their own right, claimed the bronze with a solid 36-10 win over Uganda.

The Challenger Series, mirroring the Olympic Games format, divides the 12 participating teams into three pools of four teams each.

The top two from each pool, along with the two best third-placed finishers, will advance to the knockout stages, which include quarter-finals.

Introduced in February 2020, the Challenger Series aims to foster the growth of rugby sevens globally and provide a clear pathway for teams to reach the pinnacle of this short format game.

The 2024 edition is more extensive and competitive, spanning three rounds.

Following the Dubai opener, the teams will compete in Montevideo before heading to standalone women’s and men’s events in Krakow, Poland, and Munich, Germany, in May.
