Kenya Sevens players have been awarded cash bonuses following their run to the cup final at Singapore Sevens.

Kenya Sevens players have boosted their bank balance thanks to their impressive Singapore Sevens leg when they reached the cup final.

Shujaa made it to the cup final in Singapore, rekindling memories of 2016, when they did the same and won the leg, but this time round, Fiji, the team they beat nine years ago, got their revenge as they won 21-12 to deny them the trophy.

However, it was their best run this season which earned them 18 points, the same tally they had managed in five previous rounds this term.

Following the win, Kenya Sevens’ sponsors SportPesa have rewarded the team with a Ksh1.35 million bonus for their good run in the Asian nation.

That amount will be distributed among the team members with each set to pocket Ksh75,000 which will act as motivation ahead of their relegation-promotion playoff in Los Angeles on May 3.

Shujaa fell short of the top eight positions that was required to secure their place in the World Sevens Series next season, finishing ninth, and are joined by Uruguay, Ireland and the United States of America, who finished in 10th, 11th and 12th positions respectively, while Portugal, Germany, Canada and Samoa will join them from the second tier Challenger Series.

The eight teams will now square it off in the mini-tournament in LA where the top four will get promoted to the World Series and Kenya hope to seal their place for a second year running.

Kevin Wambua’s largely inexperienced team left themselves short of a place among the top eight when they managed three points each in Dubai, Perth and Hong Kong, one in Vancouver and eight in Cape Town, and were already set for the playoffs even before the great run in Singapore.

However, reaching the cup final will give them motivation of getting the better of their playoff opponents to retain their place in the top flight.
