He was competing in the age group above 18 years and he recorded a time of 5:51.20 to win the 400m freestyle at the Nairobi County Inter-clubs Open Championship.

Samwel Nderitu is bubbling with enthusiasm ahead of the Kenya Swimming Federation national trials scheduled for May 20 and 21 at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani.

Nderitu is fresh from winning the Nairobi County Inter-clubs Open Championship held at the Makini School. He was competing in the age group above 18 years and he recorded a time of 5:51.20 in the 400m freestyle. He edged out Tavin Waweru and Don Ndiragu to second and third places respectively.

“I’m in a good place…right now I feel like I’m ready for the national trials,” Nderitu told KBC Sport after winning the category.

However, the journey has not been all rosy as he has been required to master the art of balancing between the sport and work. He added that it has taken him tons of sacrifice to get to the top.

“It takes a lot of hard work in training. For me, it has been very difficult to balance between my job and the training but somehow, I have managed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the trials will be used to pick teams for the World Championships in Fukuoka in July, the World short course Championships in Israel (September), and the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago (August).

As reported by The Star, KSF revealed that they will not be sending a team to this month's Cana Zone IV championships in Angola due to unavoidable circumstances.
