Para athlete Joy Faith Ndirangu is living proof that inability is not disability as she plans to represent the country at the 2024 Paralympic Games scheduled for August 28 to September 8 in Paris, France.
Ndirangu was born with both legs but her life changed after she was involved in an accident on April 16, 2019.
Due to the damages caused, her legs had to be amputated and Ndirangu thought that was the end of her love affair with swimming. Speaking to NTV, she disclosed that a dare from some of her friends changed her perspective.
“At one time, I was hanging out with my friends and they challenged me to try enter the pool. I was reluctant but I decided to give it a try. That’s how I knew I could still swim. At the moment, I want to work hard and represent the country at the Paralympic Games,” she said.
Meanwhile, her coach Leland Salano saw potential in her and decided to work with her. The coach said Ndirangu is always willing to learn and so far, she has been able to do more things that even an able-bodied individual can’t.
“We are now able to work with her upper body strength which engages the hands more and of course it helps a lot when it comes to the breaststroke, freestyle and even butterfly. We want to see what we can do with her as a club so that she can go far,” he said.
