Humphrey Kayange steps into a new Olympic leadership role, set to guide preparations for a major upcoming youth sports event.

International Olympic Committee member Humphrey Kayange has replaced IOC president Kirsty Coventry as the new Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for the fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar in 2026.

Former IOC president Thomas Bach appointed the legendary rugby player at the request of Kirsty Coventry, the previous chair of the commission.

The legendary rugby player brings extensive experience from his position on the Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

He has also held key leadership roles, including Chair of the Kenyan NOC Athletes’ Commission and Executive Board member of the Kenya Academy of Sports and Kenya Rugby Union.

Following his appointment, Humphrey Kayange will be responsible for leading efforts to support the committee in planning and delivering a successful event in 2026.

He will work with the National Olympic Committees, International Federations, Olympic Movement stakeholders and local authorities to ensure everything is set ahead of the D-Day.

“My vision is driven by empowering young athletes. I’m honoured to serve the Olympic Movement and help provide a platform for young people to pursue excellence,” Humphrey Kayange said upon his appointment.

“Dakar 2026 will unite young athletes from around the world, celebrating African innovation and the Olympic spirit.”

His first major role will be chairing the Coordination Commission meeting in Dakar, Senegal, on May 7 and 8, set to be attended by Kirsty Coventry.

Humphrey Kayange was a very respectable rugby player for over a decade, as he captained the Kenyan team and guided them to several notable wins.

One of the victories was at the Singapore Sevens in 2016, and he was also part of the team that competed at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Thanks to his exceptional leadership skills on and off the pitch, Humphrey Kayange earned recognition in the World Rugby Sevens Series and a 2023 World Rugby Hall of Fame induction.

Meanwhile, the YOG Dakar 2026 will take place from October 31 across three host sites (Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly).
