The national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers head coach Paul Bitok has revealed that their main focus at the moment is to win the African title when they head to the African Senior Women's Volleyball Championship slated for Sunday 6 to Friday 18 August.

The team was flagged off by Sports PS Peter Kiplagat Tum as they flew to Morocco for a residential camp ahead of the continental showpiece.

They are also set to participate in the FIVB Challenger Cup set for France from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July where Kenya will battle it out with Colombia, Mexico, and hosts France.

“We will be in Morocco for 20 days where we will be playing with some international teams. We shall then leave for France for the Challenger Cup and we hope to qualify for the second round where the winner and second position will qualify for the 2024 Volleyball Nations League.

"Our main objective for this intensive training, however, is to win the African title. We will be leaving France on the fourth as we go directly to Cameroon,” Bitok told KTN Sport.

On his part, PS Tum lamented the poor handling of players, technical bench, and coaches of the sport. Last year, Malkia Strikers almost dropped out of the High-Performance Training in Brazil in preparation for the World Championships.

The National Olympic Committee of Kenya came through and gave them an allowance of Ksh 50,000, which according to Tum, the amount was very little.

“We are aware that the conditions which we are operating are not the best…in terms of funding among other things. Somebody giving you Ksh 50,000 and we thank NOC-K for that, that is peanuts.

"We need to learn to work within that landscape and ensure that going forward, you’ll be working in an environment that helps you flourish,” Tum said.

He added that the Kenya Volleyball Federation should put their house in order since that is a big step for the sport to go forward.
