Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Beatrice Chebet and Junior Starlets Among Big Winners at 2025 SOYA Awards

Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Beatrice Chebet have been recognised following their stellar performances at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while Junior Stars made history as Kenya' first football team to represent the country at a FIFA World Cup.

Olympic heroes Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Beatrice Chebet were among the biggest winners of the 25th Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) which took place at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) on Thursday evening.

The annual ceremony, which recognises Kenyan sporting heroes for their performances, also saw the Kenya U-17 Women’s team, Junior Starlets, walk away with the Women’s team of the year accolade.

Wanyonyi and Chebet, who shared three gold medals between them at the 2024 Paris Olympics, walked away with the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards respectively.

Wanyonyi, who clinched gold in the men's 800 metres and dominated the event throughout the season, beat  Benson Kipruto, Ronald Kwemoi, basketballer Albert Odero and boxer Boniface Mugunde for the top men's honour. 

In the women’s category, Chebet, who delivered  double gold in Paris at both the 5,000 and 10,000 metre events, beat an elite field that included 1,500 metres Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, Boston Marathon winner Hellen Obiri, world marathon record holder Ruth Chepng’etich, and steeplechase bronze medallist Faith Cherotich.

Kipyegon and Obiri, finished second and third respectively, having delivered one gold and two bronze medals at the Olympics respectively.

Junior Starlets coach Mildred Cheche who guided Kenya  through a rigorous qualification path, was honored as Coach of the Year, a nod to her trailblazing journey, edging out Salim Babu’s Kenya U-20 side Rising Stars, who finished second.

Meanwhile, former Gor Mahia and Harambee Stars defender John ‘Bobby’ Ogolla was inducted into the Hall of Fame following a legendary career that was so impressive, he earned the nickname “six million dollar man”.

Nairobi City Thunder were named the men’s team of the year following a dominating 2024/2025 season that saw them  qualify for the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

Sportswoman With Disability: Michelle Chepng’etich (para-athletics)

School Coach of the Year: Benson Mwenda (All Saints Embu – XVs Rugby)

Boys’ School Team of the Year: All Saints Embu (XVs Rugby)

Girls’ Team of the Year: Kesogon Girls Secondary School (volleyball)
