Ulinzi Stars midfielder Nicholas Omondi's star has begun to glitter in the 2023/2024 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) season.

The four-time Premier League champions secured Omondi's talents at the beginning of the season, and Omondi has since proven to be an instrumental player in their journey, with the team currently holding the 11th position, boasting five wins from six matches.

However, the journey to success for Nicholas Omondi has not been an easy one.

Hailing from the slums of Kibera, his passion for football was ignited at an early age. Omondi's remarkable story involves several twists and turns, including a daring adventure to the DR Congo that nearly led him to quit the sport he loved.

Omondi's football journey began with Kibera Black Sars, where he showcased his talent and caught the attention of scouts from various clubs.

The former Kenya U-20 captain subsequently played for Kariobangi Sharks and Gor Mahia, but there came a point when he contemplated giving up on his dream.

Omondi determination was put to the test when he embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Congo.

"I went to Congo after a certain tournament, and there were rumors that those selected would be going to Belgium," Omondi recounted. "Four of us were selected from Kenya, and that was the biggest risk I have ever taken."

The young midfielder found himself in Goma, a place known for its hostility and challenges.

Omondi's resilience and determination were put to the test during those three weeks.

"We were in Goma, and we stayed there for three weeks. The place was hostile, and it was a tough experience. I think I survived thanks to my parents, friends, and fellow players," he said.

Despite the hardships he endured in the Congo, Omondi emerged from the experience stronger and more committed to his football career.

Notably, the 21-year-old's talents did not go unnoticed on the international stage.

He was linked with a move to Spanish second-division side Union Deportiva Las Palmas, a testament to his exceptional abilities.

However, Omondi faced challenges in his pursuit of this international venture, alleging that his former club, Gor Mahia, hindered his path.

His time spent at Ulinzi Stars has been marked by impressive performances, earning him recognition and admiration from fans and fellow players alike.

Omondi expresses his enjoyment and gratitude for the opportunity to play for Ulinzi Stars, a team that has provided him with a platform to showcase his talent.

He also takes a moment to acknowledge his former side, Darajani Gogo, for their role in saving his career and helping him reach this point.

"I'm grateful to Darajani Gogo FC; they gave me a chance when nobody wanted me, they paid for my bills, and I always go there to motivate the upcoming players," he noted.

Looking ahead, Omondi has big aspirations. His ultimate goal is to play abroad, and he remains hopeful that doors will open for him to pursue this dream.

With his talent, determination, and the lessons learned from his journey, there is no doubt that Omondi's future in football holds great promise.
