Junior Stars midfielder Aldrine Kibet has shared what an impressed Nigerian legend Yakubu Aiyegbeni told him after watching him in Kenya a few years ago

Kenya’s football sensation Aldrine Kibet has revealed the message of encouragement he received from former Nigeria and Everton striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni.

Kibet has captured the imagination of Kenyans since his player of the tournament heroics at the national secondary school games in August which earned him a place at the Nastic Soccer Academy in Spain and has again played a starring role for Kenya’s Junior Stars at the ongoing CECAFA U18 Boys Championships.

It appears the 17-year-old had already showed early that he was going to be a star and among those who were impressed is Aiyegbeni who seems to have been wowed by his immense talent even before Kenyans knew about him.

“Yakubu Aiyegbeni Nigerian striker and Everton once told me, ‘If you come to play in Europe one day, just look for me.’ A memorable throwback moment,” Kibet posted on social media, accompanying the post with a throwback photo of him and the Nigerian legend.

Kibet and Yakubu seem to have met in 2018 when the former Everton man visited Kenya as an ambassador for betting firm SportPesa during the SportPesa Super Cup tournament that year.

Yakubu graced the tournament in Nakuru where he met a number of budding footballers, including Kibet.

It is not clear if Kibet has since looked for Yakubu after joining the Tarragona-based academy but the Nigerian will be happy with what the attacking midfielder has become since their first meeting.

Kibet scored a record 25 goals and produced 27 assists for St Anthony’s Boys Kitale as they went on to claim the school games title at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega after beating Dagoretti High School 2-0 in the final, when he scored a brace.

He is also the leading scorer at the CECAFA U18 Championships with three goals and will be hoping to bag more when Kenya take on Uganda in the final.

Kibet has also been reported to have impressed scouts from Spanish giants Real Madrid during the regional tournament.
