Uganda's Cranes proved too stubborn for their counterparts from Senegal, the Teranga Lions, en route to a first win in CHAN in nine years.

Captain Milton Karisa scored the decisive goal to inspire the Africans to victory in Annaba, Algeria.

Uganda switches attention to Ivory Coast

Having shocked the pre-tournament favourites in their second game of the competition, the Cranes have already moved on.

According to their manager, Milutin Sredojevic, the Cranes of Uganda are already plotting how to take down their next opponent Ivory Coast in the African Nations Cup.

Milton Karisa in action for Uganda

"We are not over the moon. It is for our players and people back at home to celebrate because Uganda doesn't beat Senegal everyday," Uganda's boss, Milutin Sredojevic told CAF media.

"However, we focus our attention on the next game against Cote d'Ivoire. I have deleted this match from my mind."

The game in brief

In what was an interesting encounter between the two nations, it was Senegal who dominated the tie at Annaba.

The Teranga Lions created the best chances but failed to convert any of them against the ten-man Uganda, who had Libasse Ngom sent off seven minutes from time.

The win was Uganda's first in 9 matches.

Senegal should have taken the lead in the opening half hour after a series of chances which inlcuded a penalty.

Moussa Ndiaye was fouled in the Uganda box after an aerial challenge by Frank Ssebufu and Tunisian referee Mehrez Melki had no choice but to point to the spot.

But in what would represent a clear summary of Senegal's day, Cheikh Sidibe stepped up to the plate to miss the resultant kick.

Uganda survives the storm

Karisa's goal for the East Africans arrived against the run of play as Senegal piled on the pressure in search of an early goal.

The forward was at the right place and time to connect to a pass from Kenneth Semakula before making an impressive tap-in past Senegal goalkeeper Pape Sy in the 33rd minute.

Having survived the incredible storm, the Cranes held on for a famous win that takes them to the top of the table in Group B.
