Nottingham Forest will conduct an internal investigation into their medical team's response to Taiwo Awoniyi's serious injury sustained on Sunday.

Awoniyi sustained serious abdominal injuries after hitting a post in Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw against Leicester City.

The striker was permitted to continue the game by the medical staff before being substituted, which angered the Nottingham Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis.

The 27-year-old Nigerian striker later underwent surgery to repair a ruptured intestine and was placed in an induced coma in the hospital on Monday.

Club doctor Dr Prithish Shyam Narayan, along with other medical staff and coaches, will be questioned to gain a clear understanding of what transpired.

Forest Football Club issued a strong statement on Monday, asserting that they will not condone any situation where a player's safety is compromised.

According to the Sun, it said, "The seriousness of Taiwo Awoniyi's injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player's health and well-being must always come first.

"This principle is not just policy for us, it is the deeply held conviction of our owner. There was only shared frustration among all of us that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue."

Angered by Awoniyi's situation, Marinakis went onto the field after the final whistle to question manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

He is currently seeking clarification and information related to the injury and wants to understand the circumstances before determining whether any subsequent steps or interventions are necessary.
