Ruben Amorim: Winning Europa League Will Not Fix Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has downplayed the importance of the Europa League final, stating it will not solve Manchester United's deeper issues.

Ruben Amorim has made a controversial statement ahead of Manchester United’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur at San Mames on Wednesday night, May 21.

The Manchester United manager contradicted himself once again, after constantly speaking about how the Europa League final matters now that the Red Devils failed to impress in the English Premier League.

Manchester United are currently sixth on the Premier League table, with only 39 points. Out of their 37 matches played, they have lost 18, managing to win only 10 and drawing in nine of their matches.

Now, they have a chance to redeem themselves in the Europa League, but Ruben Amorim does not view the European competition as a big deal.

The Portuguese revealed that Manchester United has a lot of issues to fix, and winning the Europa League title will not change anything.

Ruben Amorim seemingly suggested that the title would mean a lot more to Tottenham Hotspur, who have also endured a horrible season and are just a point behind Manchester United in the Premier League.

Ruben Amorim insisted that he is focused on achieving greater things, with the Europa League final clash being a stepping stone to getting to that level.

“You can see the environment is completely different. Even in our context. The week of the preparation for the final, even the matches before the final with Athletic Bilbao with Lyon, the environment of the club is completely different,” Ruben Amorim told CBS Sports.

“When I say that it is not the most important thing for our club, I really mean it. If you win the Europa League at Manchester United, I'm really sorry, it's not a big thing. You need to go for the Premier League and the Champions League, and we are so far away.

“That is my feeling of course. It is winning a European title, but it is not enough - and I have that feeling all of the time.”

Gary Neville Disagrees with Ruben Amorim

On his part, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville insisted that the match is important to both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

“Not just from a silverware perspective, not just from a manager's perspective, but also from a finance perspective - what it gives both clubs in terms of attracting players and the money that it will put into the clubs. It's making me a little bit sick,” Neville said as quoted by The Daily Mail.

Ruben Amorim strongly believes that despite the Europa League final offering a chance at redemption, Manchester United’s true progress will only come from addressing the club’s broader shortcomings.
