Roma kicked off 2024 with a 1-1 draw at home to Atalanta to remain eighth on the Serie A table

Roma started 2024 with a 1-1 draw against Atalanta in an enthralling Serie A fixture at the Stadio Olimpico but the hosts will be disappointed by the wastage of chances to win the game.

Atalanta started the better of the two sides and were in front within the first 10 minutes as Teun Koopmeiners out-jumped Rick Karsdorp at the back post to head Aleksei Miranchuk’s cross beyond Rui Patrício.

Roma played well but were wasteful in front of goal as Romelu Lukaku saw a shot saved by Marco Carnesecchi midway through the half, a pattern that would repeat itself throughout the match.

Paulo Dybala missed a great chance in the first half as well but made up for it by scoring the equaliser from the penalty spot in the 39th minute to level proceedings.

The second half was a lot calmer than the first but Roma still created and missed chances including debuting substitute Dean Huijsen who was denied from close range.

Atalanta also had the ball in the back of the net but Scamacca's effort was ruled out for a foul in the buildup to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Mourinho’s late red card was the clash’s final talking point as the Portuguese manager got sent off for aggressively protesting the stoppage time which means he will miss Roma's next game against AC Milan.

The result sees sixth-placed Atalanta stay one point and two positions ahead of Roma in the league table, with the two teams three and four points adrift of the UEFA Champions League qualification spots respectively.
