Nwankwo Kanu's Enyimba managed just one win in six matches in the CAFCC group stage.

Nigeria's most successful football club, Enyimba FC, led by Nwankwo Kanu, have been eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup following a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Egyptian giants Zamalek in their final group stage match on Sunday evening.

This loss in Cairo marked the end of Enyimba's 2024/25 campaign in the tournament, as they struggled to find form throughout the group stage under two managers.

Struggles in the Group Stage

Under the management of young coach Yemi Olanrewaju, who was sacked in a bid to rejuvenate the team, Enyimba failed to win any of their opening three matches in the group stage.

The club's fortunes did not improve significantly under new coach Stanley Eguma, who had initially sparked renewed hope with a comprehensive win against Black Bulls but ultimately could not reverse their fortunes.

Enyimba failed to win a single game under Yemi Olanrewaju before his sack.

The People's Elephant’s inability to secure points in critical matches, especially at home, proved costly, as they finished third in Group D with just five points.

Match Highlights

In the match against Zamalek, Enyimba were punished for defensive lapses, particularly by Seifeddine Jaziri, who scored twice.

The home side took the lead with a well-placed header from Mostafa Shalaby in the 29th minute. After halftime, Jaziri extended Zamalek's advantage before Ifeanyi Ihemekwele pulled one back for Enyimba in the 57th minute, giving fans a glimmer of hope.

However, Jaziri sealed Enyimba's fate and season with his second goal three minutes from time.

Enyimba made things easy for their hosts Zamalek.

Zamalek finished the group stage as leaders without losing a match, demonstrating their strength and consistency throughout the tournament.

They will be joined by fellow Egyptians Al Masry in the quarterfinals, while Enyimba will have to regroup and focus on domestic competitions.

New Enyimba coach Stanley Eguma celebrates the club's only win in the CAFCC.

Enyimba, under the leadership of Super Eagles legend, Kanu, will now return to Nigeria to reflect on their performance this season as they switch attention to the NPFL where they currently sit seventh.

Following this early exit from continental competition, the Elephants shift their focus to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), which resumes on January 23 with a crucial fixture against former champions Kano Pillars.

The club will be looking to channel their disappointment from the CAFCC into a successful domestic campaign as they aim to add to their record nine NPFL titles.
