Napoli coach Francesco Calzona shed light on the reasoning behind Victor Osimhen's absence from the starting lineup against Inter Milan and his choice of replacement for the crucial fixture.
Osimhen's Fitness Concerns
Calzona revealed that Osimhen had been dealing with fitness issues leading up to the match against Inter. The Nigerian forward had missed training sessions and only participated in partial workouts with his teammates during the week. Due to an inflammation of a scar from a previous injury, Osimhen's involvement in the game was initially uncertain. However, despite his fitness struggles, Osimhen was included on the bench as a potential option for Napoli.
Calzona clarified, “Osimhen has an inflammation of the scar from an old injury. He is on the bench and we’ll see, if necessary, if we are able to use him today.”
Choosing a Replacement for Osimhen
With Osimhen unavailable to start, Calzona had to decide on his replacement in the lineup. While Giovanni Simeone was considered as an option to fill the void left by the centre-forward, Calzona ultimately opted for Giacomo Raspadori instead.
Explaining his choice, Calzona emphasized Raspadori's versatility and adaptability to different roles on the pitch. He highlighted Raspadori's ability to function as a center-forward, providing Napoli with a dynamic attacking threat despite Osimhen's absence. Additionally, Calzona acknowledged the presence of both Osimhen and Simeone as viable alternatives in the team's attacking setup.
“Raspadori can play in many different roles, he is also suited to being a centre-forward, but I also have Osimhen and Simeone to consider usually,” Calzona stated.

Calzona's explanation provides insight into Napoli's decision-making process regarding Victor Osimhen's involvement in the match against Inter Milan. Despite fitness concerns, Osimhen's inclusion on the bench underscores Napoli's desire to utilize him if necessary.
