The former AFC Leopards and Harambee Stars defender has heaped praise on the 17-year-old Spain based-centre back.

Harambee Stars legend Musa Otieno has heaped praise on Junior Stars captain Amos Wanjala, drawing comparisons to Stade Reims defender Joseph Okumu.

The 17-year-old made a name for himself during the 2023 National School Games while playing for St.Anthony’s Boys, which won him a scholarship to Spain’s Nastic Academy alongside fellow boy wonders Alvin Kasavuli and Aldrine Kibet.

Speaking to Habari 254 news, Otieno was in awe of his talent as well as his leadership skills, as the budding defender led Junior Stars to the final of the CECAFA u18 Boys’ Championship held in Kisumu.

Otieno wants Wanjala to be helped even further in order to help him maximize on his potential, claiming that Okumu, who has established himself as a key player for Harambee Stars and Ligue 1 outfit Reims as they seek to qualify for the Champions League next season, also went through good developer coaches like current Posta Rangers boss John Kamau for the Kenya u20 side.

“It is a matter of looking at how we will help him,” Otieno said.

“Most of our players in the national team are youthful. The likes of Okumu (Joseph) who went through coach John Kamau’s team and now if you look, he is the captain of that junior team.

“We look at heights with centre backs. He is a young boy who just completed school and is doing well, showing that there is talent.”

Otieno believes that the youth teams should be handled by highly qualified instructors, such as Salim Babu and Anthony Akulia who both led the side to the final of the tournament in order to help Wanjala and other talents maximize their potential.

“That is why I am saying the federation needs to ensure there are good instructors, they will be good educators and good coaches and those boys worked under very good coaches, the likes of Akhulia (Anthony) who has a CAF A license , as well as Salim Babu who is off graduating from CAF B and is a student like I am.

“If you get good coaches, the players will also be playing well because those players assembled together for just three days and yet they played well. They knew what they were doing and it is just about looking at ways to keep helping the federation.”
