Rayan Cherki joins Manchester City aiming for trophies, revenge on Manchester United, and freedom under Pep Guardiola after Lyon exit.

New Manchester City signing Rayan Cherki has made no secret of his desire to settle an old score with cross-town rivals Manchester United, as he prepares for life at the Etihad following a high-profile summer switch from Lyon.

The 21-year-old Frenchman completed a £30.45m move to Pep Guardiola’s side after impressing during a standout season in Ligue 1, which included a dramatic, painful European night at Old Trafford that’s still fresh in his memory.

"I [didn't] like [it] when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais," said Cherki as per BBC.

"Now I am waiting for the game [to] kill them."

From Old Trafford Agony to Etihad Ambitions

Cherki was left stunned after his former club Lyon squandered a 4-2 lead in the Europa League quarter-final second leg in April, falling 7-6 on aggregate following a breathtaking late comeback from United.

He had scored in both legs, but saw his efforts undone by a final-minute collapse that ended Lyon’s European dreams.

Videos circulated online showing the flamboyant forward celebrating one of his goals at Old Trafford by grabbing his crotch in front of the home fans.

When asked about the viral moment, Cherki laughed it off but made it clear his competitive fire is burning brightly ahead of the new Premier League season.

"I'm here to win all the games," he added defiantly.

5 Most Beautiful CHAN 2024 Stadiums

CHAN 2024 will showcase East Africa’s top stadiums, with a stunning lineup of upgraded, beautiful, and high-capacity venues across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Cherki prefers a central attacking midfield role but is versatile enough to operate on the wings, offering Guardiola flexibility and flair in the final third.

"I'm not Kevin De Bruyne, he is the legend," said Cherki.

"I'm here to help the team and to write my own story. I hope to win all the time with the team."

Cherki also opened up about his ambition to win football’s highest individual honour — the Ballon d’Or — pointing to his new teammate Rodri, who claimed the accolade in 2024.

"When you see Rodri, he won the Ballon d'Or here – it's clear that with Manchester City it's possible and I am here for this," he said.

"When I spoke with Pep, he wanted me - he was very, very clear. Pep told me, 'when you have the ball, you are free', which is very good for me because it's my first quality to help the team."

Strong Arab Influence as City Eyes Global Dominance

Cherki joins a City squad increasingly shaped by a strong Arabic and North African influence.

Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush arrived in January, while fellow Algerian Rayan Ait-Nouri has also signed this summer from Wolves in a £31m deal.

The pair have already bonded in pre-season training at City’s Florida base, warming up and working in tandem during drills.

"It was very good because it's a dream, one of the best teams in the world, a lot of great players in this team," said Ait-Nouri.

"For sure I was proud because I worked very hard since I came to England. It's a big step for my career. I will give everything. I will show what I can do on the pitch."

City's rising popularity across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has soared, with a 140 million increase in audience reach since Marmoush’s arrival.

The club’s marketing team has seen shirts bearing his name rival even Erling Haaland’s in sales.

City kick off their Club World Cup campaign against Moroccan champions Wydad AC in Philadelphia on Wednesday, and Cherki’s revenge tour is just getting started.
