FKFPL Levin Odhiambo: From being injured and clubless to potentially delivering a double with Tusker

Odhiambo signed for Tusker in the mid-season after stellar performances for Mathare United, having been a free agent just eight months ago.

Before the start of the 2022/23 FKF PL league season, Levin “leftie” Odhiambo would not have envisioned being on the brink of potentially winning a double of league and cup at the end of the season.

The former Kayole Youth player was a free agent having left Wazito while they were in administration and was nursing a nasty injury he suffered while playing against Bidco United in 2022.

When the season started however, he was able to join Mathare United, but his stay at the club did not last long after helping the club generate a good run of form in their battle for survival before he joined Tusker in March.

“The injury I suffered was a big blow and hard for me because I had never experienced such a serious injury before,” he said, “ It prevented me from joining Tusker at the time but I got the chance again mid-season, “ he added.

“I had to keep working and believing that everything would have been okay. I worked hard and got the chance to rehabilitate at Mathare using their facilities.

“I worked hard at the gym with Mathare physio trainer Onyi and thank him so much for helping me get my sharpness and fitness back.

“It gave me a chance to be signed by the club permanently. I am also indebted to coach Francis Kimanzi for believing that I would get my form back and he played a key part in helping me get into the team.”

The marauding left back who is known mostly for his fantastic deliveries with his left foot from both open play and set-piece situations has hit the ground running these two months at the club. He has already registered four assists with the last two coming in each of his last two games.

“I work so hard on my deliveries in training and at home, so any chance I get when I move into the final third to deliver a cross, our chances of getting a goal are usually high for us.”

Odhiambo credits his background having grown up in Komarock but horning his skills for Kayole as the reason he is good at that.

Having achieved his “dream of playing for one of Kenya’s biggest clubs” Tusker when he signed, he says the ball game is absolutely different at a club with the ambition and desire to win.

“The workrate here at Ruaraka is just on another level. You have to push to win day in day out because that is the culture Robert Matano has instilled here. You have to strive to be the best to earn a place in the squad.

“The boss is a total winner. You have to be on the same page as he is if you want to make it at the club. He has instilled that winning mentality in me.”

The Kamukunji High School alumnus says Tusker’s conditions are naturally set to motivate players into doing well, which is why it is not surprising they have won each of their last two league trophies ( albeit the 2022 season was nullified).

“Compared to other teams, Tusker is a well run club. The financial security is top-notch and everything flows well. That is how the club have stayed ahead of the curve,”

Odhiambo has fitted seamlessly with fellow mid-season signing Mike Oduor down the left flank. He says that playing together with Oduor for a long time in the streets has played a key part.

“Mike and I have known each other for a long time, since before signing for Tusker. We are mates from the same area so our understanding off the pitch has made it easier to forge an understanding on it.”

The Brewers have a realistic chance to win the double for the first time since 2016, and Odhiambo believes his team can win it. They are currently in the final of the FKF Cup against Kakamega Homeboyz and are leading the league table with four matches left.

“I believe we will do the double and qualify for Africa. You can see how badly everyone wants it, from the technical bench to the players.”

It is every player’s dream to represent the national football team, and Odhiambo is harboring ambitions of donning the country’s colors.

““Playing for Harambee Stars would be a dream come true. It is a chance I am working to get and hopefully maybe I might be included if I continue giving my best.

“I hope to get chances out of the country because it is my dream to go professional as well.”
