Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has given reasons why he wants South Africa’s biggest young prospect to ditch the country for Europe.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy still has his eyes on what is happening back home in South Africa even as he looks to revive the fortunes of Kenyan football.

McCarthy’s sight seems to be trained mostly on his former team Orlando Pirates which has been producing some good young players in recent years.

Pirates have on their books one of the most talented youngsters in Africa being 20-year-old winger Relebohile Mofokeng, voted the Best Young Player in the 2023-24 season and is firm favourite to retain the crown for 2024-25 as well.

Mofokeng has been the driving force for Pirates in the just-concluded season when he ended the campaign with 12 goals and 15 assists, the most by any player at the club, and due to his qualities, he is being linked with a move abroad.

The interest started last year and has only increased as his stock has risen with clubs in the US and Israel the latest to be linked to him and while he has been advised not to rush into a move abroad, McCarthy feels now is the right time for Mofokeng to leave.

“I’ve watched him several times, and I think he’s got huge potential. He’s got the mentality, the football brains, and mentality of players from my generation,” McCarthy told South African outlet IOL Sport.

“He’s generations ahead of the current crop of players. I think he’s got what it takes to make it in Europe. I would encourage him to find a way to play in Europe. South Africa, yes, it has some of the best players in Africa, but Africa is a small continent in football terms.

“When you play in Europe, you get the chance to play against the biggest and the best. It’s you against the world.”

The Kenya national team coach used his own example when he left South Africa as 20-year-old to move to Europe and join Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam before stints with Celta Vigo, FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

“I think he should consider going to the Scottish league, somewhere like that, so he can work his way up from there. Rangers and Celtic always need strikers they can bring on and develop before selling on to bigger clubs,” added the former Manchester United first-team coach.

“Some players are happy to stay in Africa, and they can make a decent living, but they become irrelevant if they don’t test themselves as hard as they can. If you play in Europe, you can excel, and he could also move to the Dutch or the Portuguese league.

“If you succeed there, it’s only a matter of time before the Premier League sides come calling. I think he’s got the ability, and he needs to give himself the opportunity.”

Mofokeng’s future at Pirates remains uncertain and speculation that he will leave in the current transfer window has intensified following the club’s decision to sign another highly-rated right winger Oswin Appollis which is deemed as a way of preparing for the 20-year-old’s departure.
