Leopards lost 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz in the semi-finals of the Mozzart Bet Cup.

AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems has expressed “disappointment” at not being able to seal a place in the Mozzart Bet Cup final against Tusker FC after his side failed to beat Kakamega Homeboyz in a match played at the Nyayo National Stadium in Saturday Afternoon.

A win for Leopards would have meant Aussems faced his sworn "enemy" Matano after both coaches fell out during the events of their league clash earlier this year.

“We are disappointed,” he said, “when you get to the semi final, you want to get all the way to the final,” he added.

Leopards conceded both goals from individual mistakes after carelessly turning over possession in dangerous areas especially with their insistence to play out from the back. Aussems described the ordeal as “suicidal”

“It was suicide. We wanted to build from behind but we took too many risks and they punished us.

“We can only blame ourselves because we made two mistakes for both goals. Against this kind of team that is performing well with tall defenders and a lot of aggressiveness.”

“We pushed high in the beginning and it was not too bad but after making too many mistakes, you lose confidence.

“Unfortunately, we scored one goal before the end and we did not get enough time to equalize.”

Aussems was quick to praise Homeboyz’ compactness especially having gone two goals up, which made it difficult for his boys to attempt to make a comeback.

“We know they would play like that. Long ball, fighting. This kind of team are capable of defending their lead and it was very difficult to come back.”

AFC Leopards had been hoping to qualify for continental football next season with a win in the cup, but will now have to wait for next season to stand a chance.

Fans and neutrals were angling for a match between Leopards and Tusker in order to witness more rivalry between Robert Matano and Patrick Aussems. Matano sued Aussems following his "jujuman" jibes aimed at the Tusker tactician on his social media page.

“I don’t know what will happen but I just wish that Gor Mahia will win next game and take this,” Aussems told Azam TV after Leopards beat Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji derby last week.
