Kenya is planning a friendly match with Ecuador in the United States next month to give exposure to the team that will do duty for the country at the 2024 CHAN tournament.

Football Kenya Federation is exploring possibilities of having Kenya’s team for the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) play a friendly match with Ecuador next month.

Kenya will co-host the tournament, which is only played by players plying their trade in African leagues, alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania in September and the country wants to ensure they have a formidable team.

“We have a request, and we are trying to put it together. It is really far but the local team can make it. It is a bit difficult because of visas and all and there being no time but they say they can do it so we will wait and see and hopefully it is possible,” FKF boss Nick Mwendwa told Capital Sport, regarding the friendly which is planned to take place in the United States.

Kenya have never featured at the CHAN tournament but will have an opportunity this year by virtue of being co-hosts.

Mwendwa also revealed that Harambee Stars will feature in a four-nations tournament yet again this year, taking place in Malawi this time, and involving the hosts, Zimbabwe and Zambia between March 16 and 22.

Kenya participated in a four-nations tournament last year where they recorded mixed fortunes, beating Pakistan 1-0 before losing to by the same margin to Mauritius, in June 2023.

Malawi and Zambia will also bring their U20 teams which will play against their Kenyan equivalents as FKF seeks to expose the upcoming players ahead of future assignments.
