Nyayo Stadium, which will be used for CHAN 2024, has been temporarily closed again to facilitate the instalation of a new tartan track ahead of the 2025 Kip Keino Classic.

Fine progress is being made at Nyayo National Stadium as Kenya rushes to install a brand-new tartan track ahead of the 2025 Absa Kip Keino Classic, slated for May 31, and the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

With both Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums having been closed since last year for renovations geared toward CHAN 2024—which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania—focus has now intensified on readying Nyayo for World Athletics Continental Tour Gold status competition once again.

The old synthetic track has already been removed and debris cleared. A grader has since leveled the surface in preparation for the installation of the new tartan surface.

Drainage works are complete, and now filling materials have been delivered to Nyayo National Stadium to prepare the base.In a few days, the running track will be ready to receive the brand new Mondo Tartan track. Hopes remain high for complete works ahead of the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour .

Barnaba Korir: Tartan Track Could Be Fully Installed by May 20

“There’s a strong sense of urgency. What we’re aiming for is to ensure the facility is ready by the first of this month,” said Kip Keino Classic boss Barnaba Korir, who has been hands-on with daily supervision.

“The contractors are ready and, provided they receive full facilitation from the government, they’re prepared to work round the clock.”

There is cautious optimism that the track could be fully installed and operational by May 20, giving enough time for final tests before Kip Keino Classic kicks off. The Ministry of Sports has also played a key role in expediting the project.

“This project is incredibly important,” Korir noted. “Many teams have already confirmed their participation. Tickets have been booked, hotels secured—the only thing we’re waiting on is the track.”

The urgency is not just about hosting Kip Keino Classic. Kenya currently lacks a World Athletics-certified venue, meaning athletes have no platform to post qualifying marks for the 2025 World Championships. Without Nyayo, that window closes.

“This track is a blessing if it’s ready in time,” the official emphasized. “It gives our athletes a fair chance to qualify. It will also serve as the venue for national trials when that time comes.”

With deadlines looming and expectations high, the transformation underway at Nyayo Stadium is a symbol of Kenya’s ambition—not just to host, but to compete at the highest level.
