Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has explained where he believes Kenya can finish at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations that the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy might have been in Kenya for just over two months but he already has in mind what he wants to achieve when his two-year stint comes to an end.

McCarthy became Harambee Stars coach at the start of March, signing a two-year contract that will take his spell up to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

His stint started with a 3-3 draw away to The Gambia and a 2-1 home defeat to Gabon which has left their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes in tatters as they are 10 points behind group leaders Ivory Coast and nine adrift of the Panthers, who occupy second place.

“It has not been very easy. When I came in, I had two weeks before I joined the national team and then I had four days to prepare players that I had never met before that I had only watched on video but it has been so refreshing,” McCarthy told Sporty TV regarding his start as Kenya coach.

“I live, eat, sleep, breathe football so I wanted that challenge so when I got there, I used my little knowledge playing in Africa, World Cup and qualifying for World Cup so that is the message I put out to the players and they looked at me with those eyes of; ‘Oh my God we want also us to experience thi but unfortunately, it was not good enough because the time was very limited.

“We had four days to work together, to try and beat Gabon that was in second place, and Gambia, but just to experience, to see the quality and potential in the team was exciting.”

Having gotten an idea on the size of job on his hands, McCarthy is looking to put together a squad that will have a good blend of young and experienced players who he will test during the 2024 African Nations Championships set to be staged in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in August.

“I am looking forward to going back and then working on the June international friendlies and then we have CHAN coming up in August so a month of that and working with the local players that play in Kenya,” added McCarthy.

“I am looking forward to that and also when I watched the U20 AFCON, I saw some real potential from the squad in the Kenyan U20 national team with a lot of good players coming through so I have got a big pot of players to work with.“

McCarthy feels Kenya is a sleeping giant that needs to be woken up and believes there is enough quality to challenge for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations title, backing himself to guide Harambee Stars to the latter stages of the competition.

“Our chance of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is very slim but in 2027, we are the hosts of Africa Cup of Nations and my full focus will be on getting the best team out there and getting the best young players together so that 2027 AFCON, Kenya will not just be there to participate, but be at least in the semi-final or final,” said the South African legend.

“That is what I want in Kenya, because they are a sleeping giant that needs to wake up and hopefully, I am the guy to do that.”

McCarthy has been crisscrossing the country looking at different players and he is expected to test some of them during the yet-to-be revealed friendly matches in June as part of their CHAN 2024 preparations.
