Mwalala has hailed the variety of his three centre-forward options including 2021/2022 Golden Boot winner Derrick Otanga.

KCB head coach Bernard Mwalala has praised the variety of his center forwards Francis Kahiro, Nicholas Kipkirui, and Derrick Otanga after he got off to a winning start in his first game in charge of the Bankers against AFC Leopards.

Mwalala opted to start Francis Kahiro, who struggled to cement a place under previous head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno after signing from FC Talanta in the 2022-2023 season.

Although Kahiro did not score, he was a handful for the AFC Leopards backline. He stretched the defence, dragged markers away with his willingness to drop deep and come for the ball, and linked play decently.

He then subbed on former Gor Mahia striker Nicholas Kipkirui and Derrick Otanga, and the latter netted the winning goal for the Nairobi-based outfit.

Mwalala is pleased with the variety of his options and has explained how they will give him options in his quest for the title this season.

“It was very good. If you look, I have three strikers who are equal in terms of ability. It is all now just a matter of being wise with the pecking order,” Mwalala said.

“Kahiro can start in the second half and tire out that defense before Otanga or Kipkirui come in to finish up the game.

“My gameplan worked. I think where Kahiru started and Otanga came in later on my part. If it works on the pitch, it has to be kudos to those players who executed it.”

Before leaving for Libya and then Kenya Police, Otanga won the FKFPL Golden Boot race in 2022. Mwalala is happy to have the marksman back as he will solve the side’s profligacy issue from last season, given they had the best defence in the league, but were the least clinical of any top-half side.

“His job is to score goals. He was once the league’s top scorer. Returning for his first game and then scoring shows that we are solving the problem we had of being profligate last season.”

KCB will face Shabana in their second league match of the season.
