Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has maintained that Liam Delap is not what the club’s fans wanted even after the striker’s positive debut at Club World Cup.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes the club's new striker, Liam Delap, was not the player the fans hoped for this summer.
Speaking on DAZN during Chelsea's 2-0 Club World Cup opening victory against Los Angeles FC on Monday, Mikel suggested a different striker, and compatriot, was the preferred choice.
"We need someone to come in, score goals and finish those chances. Obviously, he [Delap] isn't the guy the fans wanted. We know who the fans wanted,” said Mikel as quoted by Dailymail.

“The fans wanted Victor Osimhen to come to the club but he didn't. Obviously, the club decided to go with Delap. He is young, he is gonna get better. Hopefully he hits the ground running and then he is gonna quieten those doubters.

Can Liam Delap Dislodge Nicolas Jackson?

“I wish him well, I hope he succeeds at this club. I think he can. The runs I saw today, running behind defenders, I think he can be the guy to finish those chances.”
The 22-year-old Delap recently joined Chelsea from Ipswich in a £30 million deal. He made his debut on Monday, assisting in Chelsea's win against LAFC.
While Mikel praised Delap's contribution, he believes the youngster will likely begin next season as backup to Nicolas Jackson under manager Enzo Maresca.
“But, Nic Jackson, let's not forget, I still think he will be the main man. He just needs to work on his finishing. I still think he is gonna be the guy to start the season. During the season, if he's not scoring then Delap gets his opportunity. Healthy competition is really important,” added the Nigerian, who made over 200 appearances for Chelsea.
