Brian Mandela remains on track for a league and cup double with Mamelodi Sundowns after their FA Cup semi-final win.

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela stayed on course for a South African league and cup double as his team Mamelodi Sundowns edged closer to an unprecedented achievement with a thrilling 2-1 victory against Stellenbosch in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

The match held near Cape Town set the stage for a high-stakes final showdown against Orlando Pirates scheduled for June 1 in Mbombela.

Although Mandela did not feature in the latest clash his presence in the team this season has been a key factor in Sundowns' impressive run.

The Tshwane giants secured their victory through early and late goals from Khuliso Mudau and substitute Thembinkosi Lorch respectively.

Mudau's goal came just 11 minutes into the game while Lorch’s contribution in the 74th minute reinforced Sundowns' dominance. The match witnessed by a sell-out crowd of 12,000 escalated in intensity when Sundowns missed a penalty and Stellenbosch quickly responded with a goal turning the final minutes into a nail-biting affair.

Despite the tense finish Sundowns held on to their lead marking an end to Stellenbosch’s 25-match unbeaten streak across all competitions. This victory not only propelled Sundowns into the final but also kept alive their hopes for a double having clinched their seventh consecutive Premiership title earlier in the week with a commanding 5-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

Mandela's potential to lift the South African double would mark a significant milestone in his career underscoring his importance to the team despite not playing in the semi-final.

His contributions throughout the season have been vital in maintaining the defensive solidity of a team that remains unbeaten in 33 domestic matches since the start of the season in August.

Looking ahead to the final, Sundowns are set to face Orlando Pirates who themselves secured a spot after defeating Chippa United 3-1 in Gqeberha.
