Benni McCarthy has opened up about emulating Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso as he looks to take Harambee Stars to the next level.
The former Manchester United attacking coach was appointed the head coach of Kenya’s national team on March 3, 2025, on a two-year contract.
His contract will extend until after the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, meaning his current tenure will last through the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign and the 2027 AFCON, which Kenya will be co-hosting.

“And if I can give a young generational manager someone that I played against when I was coming through, and I see how successful he is and how well he's done because he's been given the opportunity, is Xavi Alonso,” Benni McCarthy revealed.
“They know he understands the game, so he's got his rules of how he works and the type of discipline that he implements in his team and what he wants from his players, but he also gives them the freedom.”
Benni McCarthy is aiming to build not just a competitive Harambee Stars squad, but a united, and disciplined team.
He believes that following in the footsteps of Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso very foundations he believes will define his success as Kenya’s head coach.
