Harambee Stars, led by captain Michael Olunga, face Russia in a vital World Cup prep, seeking confidence before challenging qualifiers.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed optimism and readiness as Kenya gears up for an international friendly against Russia on Monday evening.

The anticipated match is scheduled to take place at the Titanic Sports Complex in Antalya, Turkey, kicking off at 7 PM (EAT).

This friendly encounter serves as a crucial part of the team's preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to commence in November.

Olunga shared his thoughts following the team's final training session in Turkey, conducted under the vibrant glow of floodlights.

“We had good preparations here in Turkey; the morale is quite high, and everyone is expecting a good game," he remarked.

The Qatar-based striker acknowledged the significance of facing Russia, a formidable team currently ranked 39th in the world.

"It is an interesting fixture against Russia, and we are going out to compete," he added.

As the team captain, Olunga recognises the value of international friendlies in gaining experience and learning.

"Now, with the last preparations before the World Cup qualifiers begin, I believe it will be a good test against the Russian team to see and gauge ourselves where we are,” he concluded.

The upcoming friendly against Russia follows Kenya's participation in four international friendlies this year, with their sole victory coming against the 2022 FIFA World Cup host, Qatar.

The win against Qatar has undoubtedly provided a boost to the team's morale, and another victory against Russia would serve as much-needed momentum heading into the World Cup qualifiers.

Kenya finds itself placed in Group ‘F’ alongside Ivory Coast, Gabon, Gambia, Burundi, and Seychelles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Engin Firat's coached side is gearing up for a challenging journey, set to commence with an away game against Gabon at Stade de Franceville on Monday, November 13.
