Benson Omala’s brace may have settled the Mashemeji derby but he is likely to miss out on the player of the week accolades to Shabana’s Brian Magare

Shabana’s Brian Magare is headed for victory in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League Player of the week vote as he leads Gor Mahia’s Benson Omala by nearly three times in an online poll.

Following conclusion of the sixth round of matches on Monday, FKF PL listed Magare, Omala, Murang’a Seal’s John Kiplagat and FC Talanta’s Erick Ombija for the player of the week accolades while asking fans to vote for whom they thought was outstanding.

One hour into the online voting, Magare had already garnered over 60 per cent of the vote to Omala’s 19 per cent with Kiplagat just over 14 per cent.

Magare, who can play at right-back and midfield, had an impressive game as Shabana secured their first Premier League win of the season, following 1-0 defeat of Tusker FC.

Second-half substitute Vincent Nyabuto headed in Rodgers Aloro’s free-kick as Tore Bobe won in the top flight for the first time in 17 years but Magare played a big part but ensuring he did not give the Tusker attackers a sniff at Shabana’s goal, helping his side to the three points.

Omala, meanwhile, was the hero as Gor Mahia put arch rivals AFC Leopards to the sword, scoring a brace in K’Ogalo’s 2-0 win in last Saturday’s Mashemeji derby.

The striker is currently the league’s leading scorer with six goals and looks set to lead Gor Mahia’s charge to a record extending 21st title after bagging a record-equaling 26 last season.

Like Omala, Kiplagat equally scored twice to help Murang’a Seal to a 2-0 win over struggling Sofapaka. The forward netted both goals in the first half as Batoto ba Mungu failed to mount a comeback.

While he has received the lowest vote so far, FC Talanta’s Ombija outscored everyone else last weekend as he bagged a hat-trick in his side’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Kakamega Homeboyz.

Homeboyz took the lead twice but Ombija’s heroics ensured Talanta got a share of the spoils at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Shabana fans have massively backed their team this season and Magare’s lead in the vote is another example of the supporters’ dedication to lifting their team on and off the pitch.
