Gor Mahia Blow Chance to Top FKF Premier League After Frustrating Draw Against Sofapaka

K'Ogalo missed a chance to top the FKF Premier League after playing to a draw against Sofapaka at Dandora Stadium.

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Sofapaka on Saturday, April 19th at the Dandora Stadium.

Coming into the fixture just three points behind leaders Kenya Police FC (49 points) with a superior goal difference, K’Ogalo needed nothing short of maximum points to overtake the law enforcers.

However, the stalemate means Gor Mahia remain in second place on 47 points—just two adrift of the top. Having watched Kenya Police stumble in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ulinzi Stars, the door had been left wide open for Gor to capitalize.

The result sees Gor Mahia extend their unbeaten run but leaves them still chasing top spot, which has been traded between Tusker FC and Kenya Police throughout the season.

Rodgers Kipkemoi came closest to breaking the deadlock when his shot came back off the crossbar early in the second half as Batoto ba Mungu registered their tenth draw of the season to remain eight on the log as Gor Mahia failed to move on the top of the league table as they remained on third position.

The hosts were pinned inside their territory for long spells in the first half and Edward Olak was called into action twice early on, saving a free-kick in the third minute before dealing with another set-piece at his near post on 17 minutes.

Mathews Gad had a quiet opening 45 minutes and he wasn't even required to make a save when Derick Mwanzi took a pop from range on the stroke of halftime, but saw his shot fly wide of the goal.

Gor Mahia made a bright start to the second half, however, as Kipkemoi rattled the crossbar on 49 minutes following good combination play to set him up.

Gad was finally tested six minutes later, although Bramwel Simiyu's strike lacked the necessary power to really trouble the Kenya international after more good link-up play.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute when Ibrahim Joshua found space inside the box and calmly slotted past Olak after a slick passing move, handing Gor Mahia a deserved lead.

The visitors then went close to adding their second on 67 minutes as Lawrence Juma lashed a shot from range just over the bar and Olak had to be alert two minutes later to keep out another attempt on goal.

Jack Ong’anya almost scored an equalizer for Sofapaka in the 82nd minute with a shot on the turn that was well saved by Gad, who then watched on as Alpha Onyango and Austin Odhiambo both cleared the target.

Sofapaka found the equalizer in the closing stages, when Douglas Kibet rose to the occasion in the 90th minute latching onto a loose ball and calmly finishing to level the score and break Gor Mahia’s hearts late on.
