Transgender women will now not be allowed to play football in England after the FA made a decision to bar them from the sport following a recent court ruling.

Transgender women will no longer be allowed to play professional football in England from June 1, 2025 following a decision by the Football Association.

The FA, football’s governing body in England, has joined those who have banned trans women from sport, declaring that they have no place in the country following a ruling by the UK Supreme Court on April 15.

The FA had amended its eligibility criteria for trans women in football on April 11 but four days later, the Supreme Court made its decision, saying the definition of a woman is by biological sex, and the sport’s governing body has wasted little time, announcing that only those born female will be allowed to compete.

"This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science, or the operation of the policy in grassroots football then we would review it and change it, if necessary," the FA said as quoted by BBC Sport.

"We understand that this will be difficult for people who simply want to play the game they love in the gender by which they identify, and we are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game."

Who else has banned trans women from sports?

According to the BBC, Scottish football will also follow their England counterparts by banning transgender women from competing in the country.

The FA had previously allowed trans women to compete in England but they had to meet certain criteria, which included providing medical records that prove their testosterone levels had been below the prescribed levels for at least 12 months, and provide a record of hormone therapy as well as an annual review of treatment.

Controversy over trans women competing in sports has been rife this year especially since the swearing in of US President Donald Trump in January and in February, he took it further when he signed an executive order preventing transgender women from competing in all sports in the United States.
