Wanyama, who returned to Scottish football earlier this year, has seen his hopes of extending his stay back there handed a boost even after recently withdrawing from the Harambee Stars squad.

Victor Wanyama’s prospects of extending his stay at Scottish Championship outfit Dunfermline Athletic have received a major lift following the contract renewal of head coach Neil Lennon.

Lennon, who Wanyama has repeatedly credited as a key figure in his career, signed a fresh two-year deal on Thursday, May 29, committing his future to the Fife-based club until 2027.

The development is widely expected to influence Wanyama’s decision to continue at the club, especially considering his strong admiration for the Irish tactician.

The 33-year-old midfielder, whose short-term contract expired at the close of the 2024–2025 season, was part of a select group of players in “ongoing dialogue” with the club regarding possible renewals. He had earlier hinted that the presence of Lennon would play a significant role in determining whether he stays on.

“Hopefully, we will see, because I had a good short stay here, and it would be nice to be back here and continue the adventure,” Wanyama said in an interview with the club last month.

The relationship between the two dates back to 2011, when Lennon brought a young Wanyama to Celtic from Belgian side Beerschot AC. Under Lennon’s stewardship, Wanyama won league titles and starred in the UEFA Champions League, most notably during Celtic’s unforgettable 2-1 win over Barcelona.

In his first interview upon joining Dunfermline, Wanyama remarked: “I spoke to the manager, and of course, the manager has done a lot in my career, played a big part in my career. He asked me to come and help him out, and I said, you know, why not?”

With Lennon now officially staying, all signs point to a renewed chapter for Wanyama at East End Park—especially in light of his recent withdrawal from the national team setup, citing “personal commitments.”

That decision dashed hopes of a high-profile return to Harambee Stars, with Wanyama having been included in the provisional squad to face Chad in two friendlies scheduled for June 7 and 10 in Morocco.

The Football Kenya Federation confirmed his exit in a statement: “Due to personal commitments, Wanyama has requested to be excused from the upcoming matches. Head coach Benni McCarthy has accepted the request.”

It would have been his first outing in national colours since retiring in 2021—a potential comeback that had stirred excitement among fans eager to see his experience injected into a young squad.

Now, with international duty once again on hold, the stage appears set for Wanyama to refocus his efforts on club football—under the man who has guided some of the biggest moments of his career.
