Kenya names a 23-woman Harambee Starlets squad with seven new faces for a friendly against Morocco ahead of WAFCON qualifiers.

There are a few new faces as well as several returnees to Harambee Starlets squad as head coach Beldine Odemba on Friday named a 23-woman team set to face Morocco in an international friendly scheduled for Wednesday.

The high-profile fixture, which will be played away, marks Kenya’s return to the pitch two months after suffering a 2-0 double defeat to Côte d'Ivoire in Abidjan.

Shiyonzo Leads New Call-Ups

The upcoming match serves as vital preparation for the final round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, where Starlets are set to clash with The Gambia on October 20 and 28.

Kenya booked their place in the final round after edging Tunisia 1-0 on aggregate during the first round in February.

The first leg of the tie ended in a goalless stalemate at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi on March 21, before Starlets clinched a narrow 1-0 win in the return leg at Sousse Olympic Stadium in Tunisia.

Striker Tereza Engesha, who scored the all-important goal in the third minute, is a surprise omission from the current squad.

Among the standout additions to the team is Kibera Soccer Women’s goalkeeper Vivian Shiyonzo, whose stellar performances in the 2024/25 FKF Women Premier League saw her keep 13 clean sheets.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper earns her maiden national team call-up and is one of seven new or returning players included by Odemba.

Also making a return to the national fold are defender Leah Andiema, striker Tumaini Waliaula, and midfield trio Diana Wacera, Phoebe Aketch, and Martha Amunyolet. Team captain Dorcas Shikobe also makes a welcome comeback after recovering from a long-term injury.

Star Players Retained for Stability

Despite the changes, coach Odemba has retained a core of experienced players to maintain stability.

Regulars like goalkeeper Annedy Kundu and defenders Ruth Ingosi, Enez Mango, and Vivian Nasaka continue to form the backbone of the team. Midfielders Sheril Angach, Fasila Adhiambo, and Corazone Aquino also feature prominently in the lineup.

Leading the front line are seasoned forwards Mwanahalima Adam, Violet Nanjala, Jentrix Shikangwa, Elizabeth Wambui, Faith Mboya, and Emily Morang’a—each bringing experience and flair to the Starlets’ attacking options.

The friendly against Morocco is expected to test the team’s readiness for continental action and provide valuable game time to the newly called-up players as Kenya eyes a spot in the WAFCON finals.
