Bungoma Stars defeated FKF Premier League side FC Talanta to advance to the FKF Cup Round of 16.

Bungoma Stars caused another upset in the FKF Cup when they defeated FC Talanta FC 1-0 in a Round of 32 clash played at Police Sacco Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The FKF Division Two Western side progressed to the Round of 32 having eliminated 2015 winners Bandari FC in the preliminary clash on January 28.

Going into the match, it was clear that Bungoma Stars coach Sylvestus Lichungu  wanted more strength at the back as he went for a defensive back five. Talanta on the other hand, went for a more attacking formation and opted for a front three.

The hosts threatened first through  Augustine Kuta who tested Bungoma goalkeeper Geoffrey Nyongesa.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper made a decent save to deny the Talanta marksman seven minutes into the encounter.

Bungoma also looked dangerous every time they pushed forward and they came very close to scoring through  Meshack Makokha.

The experienced winger's curling long-range shot hit the crossbar, with Talanta keeper Isaiah Wakasala well beaten.

Talanta on the other end of the pitch  kept pushing for the opening goal and Alex Luganji missed the target with a good shot just before the half-hour mark.

However, the deadlock was broken in the 38th minute following a mistake by the Talanta defence.

Meshack Makokha pounced and beatIsaiah Wakasala with a low shot to make it 1-0 to Bungoma and it was his second goal of the tournament.

Talanta tried to respond with a goal, but Bungoma stood firm at the back and the score was 1-0 to the visitors at halftime.

Talanta pushed for the equalizing goal after the restart, with Alex Kipruto  looking to impress, having replaced Michael Jairo.

The forward tried his luck from range and his shot missed the target without troubling Geoffrey Nyongesa in the Bungoma goal.

However, Bungoma continued to attack as they nearly looked to double their lead but Vinedine Ambesa failed to pull the strings in midfield.

Talanta tried to respond with a goal at the other end a few minutes later after some good work from former Nzoia Sugar forward Alfred Emoni.

The experienced attacker flicked the ball into Jairo's path, but the left-sided player placed his effort wide of the target from inside the Bungoma box.

Derrick Tekwo managed to round Ian Omondi, but he sent his effort wide of the mark and Talanta survived a scare as their defence was exposed at the time.

The hosts launched late attacks in search of an equalizer to ensure that the game ended in a draw.

However, Bungoma stood firm at the back in the dying minutes of the game, and ultimately ran out 1-0 winners on the day and a place in the Round of 16 of the competition.
