Arsenal are in advanced talks to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon according to The Athletic's David Ornstein, but why are they signing him over Benjamin Sesko?

With back-to-back Premier League title pushes falling just short, Arsenal find themselves closer than ever to ending a 20-year wait. The project under Mikel Arteta is mature, the team is settled, and the football is consistently dominant — but the absence of a reliable, prolific centre-forward continues to be a sticking point.

Benjamin Sesko had emerged as a long-term target: tall, fast, technically gifted, and brimming with potential.

However, his recent decision to remain at RB Leipzig has forced Arsenal to pivot — and according to The Athletic, the man they’re turning to, Viktor Gyokeres, may not just be a second option.

In fact, he could be the more logical choice for a club in win-now mode. Here are eight reasons why Arsenal are moving for Gyokeres over Sesko.

Gyokeres Is Ready to Deliver Now

Arsenal are no longer building for the future — they’re building to win now. With the club pushing for the Premier League title in back-to-back seasons, the margin for error is narrowing. Mikel Arteta’s side can’t afford to wait on potential.

That is  where Viktor Gyokeres stands out. At 27, he is  entering his prime, and his record at Sporting — nearly 100 goals in under 100 games — shows a forward who’s already polished, confident, and ready to lead the line immediately.

By contrast, Benjamin Sesko, just 21, remains a long-term project. His ceiling may be sky-high, but Arsenal need impact today — not in 2027.

Premier League-Proven Physicality

Gyokeres has already tasted English football, most notably in the Championship with Coventry City, where he bullied defenders with his strength, aggression, and relentless running.

He has since added a layer of refinement at Sporting, but the core attributes remain: he’s hard to knock off the ball, impossible to ignore in duels, and thrives with his back to goal.

That rugged, contact-loving style is ideal for the Premier League. Sesko, although tall and mobile, hasn’t had the same kind of weekly exposure to the grind of English defending. Arsenal know what they are getting with Gyokeres — a striker who can absorb pressure and give them a physical edge against packed boxes and deep blocks.

A Relentless, Elite-Level Presser

Arteta demands forwards who can press with intelligence, urgency, and consistency. Gyokeres does exactly that — and then some.

At Sporting, he averaged more high-speed sprints in behind than any other striker in Portugal, and outpaced even the Premier League’s top pressers in that metric.

His defensive work rate is elite, with non-stop movement and anticipation that creates chaos for opposition defenders.

Sesko, while improving, hasn’t yet mastered this side of the game. He often lags behind in pressing triggers and spatial awareness. In a system as tactically demanding as Arsenal’s, that is a major factor.

Proven Goal Threat in Tight, Transitional Games

Arsenal dominate most matches but still struggle to convert control into goals when opponents sit deep. That’s where Gyokeres brings variety.

He can operate on the counter, bully defenders in tight channels, or sniff out scrappy finishes in crowded boxes.

Whether he’s picking up the ball wide, rolling a defender in the half-space, or finishing from tight angles, he offers a broader toolkit than Sesko, who still relies heavily on space to exploit. Gyokeres gives Arsenal the ability to vary their rhythm and unlock games in which their usual approach stagnates.

Left-Sided Strength Could Balance Arsenal’s Attack

Arsenal’s attack has become right-heavy, with Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Ben White dominating that flank.

On the left, however, their touch map drops significantly. Gyokeres could help address that imbalance. He often drifts into the left channel, creating overloads and driving inside with power.

He thrives running the inside-left lane, where Arsenal have lacked consistent presence. Sesko, while capable of movement across the front line, tends to stay central or drift right — a less natural fit for the structural need Arsenal are trying to fill.

More Reliable Link-Up Play in Physical Games

One area where Gyokeres shows greater maturity than Sesko is in link-up play under pressure. He can chest down long balls, pin defenders, and create space for onrushing midfielders — qualities Arsenal often need when teams deny central progression.

His ability to bring others into play while under duress has improved year after year, and his assist record at Sporting reflects that added dimension.

Sesko, while technically sound, is still learning how to operate in those close-quarter, crowded central areas that Premier League football demands.

Arsenal’s Style Needs Someone Who Can Create on His Own

Not every goal at the highest level comes from fluid team play. Sometimes, strikers need to create from nothing — a one-man breakaway, a solo run, a strike after holding off three defenders. Gyokeres has made a habit of that.

He scores all types of goals, but his ability to manufacture danger when little seems on is especially valuable in the Premier League. His direct, aggressive style forces defenders into uncomfortable positions. While Sesko has shown flashes of this, he’s not yet the kind of player who can regularly fashion chances without significant buildup support.

Arsenal Are Prioritising Certainty Over Upside

Perhaps the biggest reason Arsenal are pivoting to Gyokeres is one of risk. Sesko may go on to become a world-class striker, but Arsenal aren’t in a position to gamble.

Gyokeres represents a safer bet — a player with a defined profile, consistent output, and attributes that directly answer the tactical and psychological questions Arsenal have faced in recent seasons. He won’t just add goals; he will add presence, power, and variety.

In the fine margins of a title race, that difference could be decisive.
