A former teammate of Brian Mandela from Mamelodi Sundowns unveils a startling truth about his departure.

Brian Mandela's former teammate, Lyle Lakay, has publicly addressed his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns and how it paved the way for his successful stint with SuperSport United.

The 32-year-old midfielder's exit from Sundowns was unexpected, following a loan to Cape Town City and a period of uncertainty, until coach Gavin Hunt welcomed him to the rival camp in August last year.

After marking his presence in 27 matches across all competitions, contributing four goals and five assists, Lakay believes that joining SuperSport United was the best course of action for his career.

"It didn't end the way I wanted it to end at Sundowns, but that's life, it happens everywhere. I've made peace with it, I've moved on and I'm at SuperSport now," Lakay reflected as per SABC Sport.

With more than half the season behind them, Lakay credits his peaceful acceptance of the past for his current success on the field.

"We're past the halfway mark of the season, and I believe, if I hadn't made peace with it, I wouldn't have been in the situation I am in now, in terms of performances, goals, and assists," he added.

Stepping into a SuperSport side brimming with youthful talent, Lakay quickly assumed a leadership role, something he believes his performance reflects.

"I'm enjoying it. Over the last few weeks or month, looking at my performance – and not to speak too highly of myself – I think it was four or five games in a row that I contributed significantly," said Lakay, emphasizing his aim for the season is to hit double figures in both goals and assists.

Having tallied eight or nine goals and assists so far, with about eight games left, including the Nedbank Cup, Lakay is optimistic about reaching his targets.

Before his tenure at Sundowns, Lakay had a notable season with Cape Town City, where he made 28 league appearances, scoring two goals and providing four assists, following his transfer from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic.
