Michael Olunga’s hat-trick against Zimbabwe has seen him get on the shoulders of Kenya’s goalscoring legends with Dennis Oliech’s record among those in danger.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga gas moved to fourth on the all-time top scorers list for Kenya following his hat-trick against Zimbabwe in the Four Nations tournament on Tuesday.

Olunga helped Kenya to a 3-1 comeback win over the Zimbabweans, equalising on the stroke of halftime, before adding two more to put the result beyond doubt.

With the win, Kenya ended the tournament with seven goals, after their 4-0 thrashing of hosts Malawi on Saturday with, Olunga scoring five of them.

The Al Duhail striker had bagged a brace against Malawi to take his tally to 26 but he is now on 29 from 58 games which sees him dislodge Livingstone Madegwa and Ali Akajo, who were also on 26 goals each before Tuesday’s match.

Now in his sights is AFC Leopards legend Elijah Lidonde who managed 33 goals for Harambee Stars in just 26 matches between 1950 and 1961.

If he continues in the form he is in, it will not be long before Olunga breaks Dennis Oliech’s tally of 34 goals which puts him second on the all-time list, having managed it in 76 games from 2002-2015.

Former Gor Mahia forward William Ouma leads the top scorer’s list with 35 goals from 66 games scored between 1965 and 1977 but Olunga is now just six goals away from matching him.

The Kenyan captain celebrated his 30th birthday with the hat-trick on Thursday and with plenty of football still left in him, few can rule him out of scoring the seven goals he needs to surpass Ouma and become Kenya’s finest striker.

Olunga has shown great form in his last three matches in national team colours, scoring seven goals during that run. He bagged a brace against Seychelles in the 2026 World Cup qualifier in November before his five goals in the Four Nations tournament.

His scoring spree is good news for Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat who has backed him even in the face of criticism after he went six games without scoring between March and November 2023.

Tough assignments await for Kenya in June with Burundi and African champions Ivory Coast next in the World Cup qualifiers, but they will be counting on Olunga as he also seeks to seal his personal milestones.
