Musa Masika has been on hot form since joining Mathare United from Gor Mahia, with his form now almost certainly catching Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy ahead of CHAN 2024.

Mathare United head coach John Kamau has heaped praise on Musa Masika following the midfielder’s remarkable turnaround since swapping Gor Mahia for the Slum Boys in February.

The former Wazito FC player endured a tough spell at K’Ogalo, where regular playing time proved elusive. However, since linking up with Kamau—his former coach at the Kenya U20 national team—Masika has been a revelation.

Masika joined Mathare during the mid-season transfer window as a relatively low-profile signing, but he is quickly proving to be one of the smartest pieces of business this FKF Premier League season.

He has already netted six goals—five of which have come in just eight appearances for Mathare—and added four assists. His latest contribution, a 73rd-minute winner against Ulinzi Stars, handed Mathare a narrow 1-0 win and further solidified his importance to the side.

Kamau: We knew what we were getting with Masika

While most of his appearances have come off the bench, Kamau handed Masika a rare start against Ulinzi—and he didn’t disappoint.

The Mathare tactician, who was instrumental in Masika’s development at the junior national level, believes the 25-year-old is now fulfilling his potential.

“Individual effort in a group record. For him to get those chances, it is because other players are creating a platform for him to build upon,” said Kamau.

“I think being a player that I worked with for the Kenya U20 side, he came to play for a coach he already knew.”

Kamau also highlighted Masika’s attitude and determination, especially after starting out as an impact substitute.

“I like his mentality and attitude because when he came in, he was not always starting. He was coming in as an impact sub and having an impact, which is good for a player as senior as he is.”

“It is motivating other younger players. We have had to be patient with him because this was only his second start. Some of his actions had declined, but we knew he was someone that would give us three points.”

“We had to retain him in the side and we are now trying to influence him on the touchline. We are happy with him. He is also happy because what he was not getting at Gor Mahia, he is getting here. He is on five goals and four assists in the league now. He is a good signing and a good goalscoring machine.”

Masika’s resurgence has reportedly caught the attention of Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy, who is keen on using the CHAN tournament to highlight Kenya’s local talent.

The South African tactician has been spotted at several FKF Premier League matches in recent weeks, and according to sources close to the national team camp, Masika is firmly on his radar.

McCarthy has been vocal about his intent to rebuild the national team with players who are in form, and Masika’s recent performances fit the bill.

His goal contributions have directly influenced nearly every match he’s featured in, making him one of the league’s standout performers in the second half of the season.

“He needs to keep what he is doing because I am sure he has plans to make the Harambee Stars squad for CHAN, which is a big motivation for him,” Kamau added.
