Orlando Pirates have pulled off a shock yet again after confirming the appointment of a little-known coach, having been linked to the likes of Benni McCarthy and Rulani Mokwena.

As it has become the style of Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza, he has pulled yet another surprise regarding the appointment of the club’s head coach.

Pirates have been linked with a move for Harambe Stars boss Benni McCarthy, veteran Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena but Khoza has gone for a little-known coach yet again following the appointment of Moroccan Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Ouaddou was officially confirmed as the new coach of the South African giants on Monday, ending weeks of speculation, where none of the reports linked him to the job.

“Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing Jose Riveiro at the helm, following his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure,” Pirates announced through a club statement.

Where Else Has Abdeslam Ouaddou Worked?

“Born in Alnif, Morocco, the 46-year-old brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a tactician. A former Moroccan international, Ouaddou earned 68 caps for The Atlas Lions and enjoyed a distinguished playing career across several top European leagues. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era.

“Coach Ouaddou, who is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of the week, will be assisted by Mandla Ncikazi and Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons.”

Just like Jose Riveiro, who he is succeeding, Ouaddou does not have vast coaching experience as his last stint was a short stay at Congolese side AS Vita, who he joined in January 2024, having previously served as assistant coach of the Algeria national team, as well as stints in Benin, Morocco, Algeria, and France. He also worked in South Africa as coach of Marumo Gallants.

The former Fulham, Olympiacos and Al Dhuail centre-back has the tough job of following Riveiro’s legacy after the Spanish coach lifted standards at the club, leading them to three straight second place finishes, as well as winning five trophies and making it to the CAF Champions League semi-final last season.
