Barcelona's quest to sign Ilkay Gundogan has taken a significant blow following his agent's statements

LaLiga giants Barcelona have received another blow in the race to sign Manchester City’s German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan after recent comments by his agents.

The current LaLiga leaders, have appeared keen on signing Gundogan when his contract with Manchester City ends after the current season, but have faced serious challenges in their quest for his signature, including this latest one.

Gundogan has been a part of the Manchester City set-up since his 2016 move from Borussia Dortmund and has made 290 appearances for the Cityzens in his seven years at the club, becoming an integral part of the team despite an initial injury layoff for almost an entire season.

The German midfielder wrote himself into Manchester City folklore by scoring two goals on the final day of the 2021/22 season to clinch the Premier League title, after also being integral to the 2020/21 league with 13 goals and three assists in 28 Premier League appearances.

Despite the successes at Manchester City, rumours have swirled about Gundogan’s future at the club especially after he turned 32 at the end of last year.

The fact that he has not signed a new contract with the Cityzens has only opened him up for more speculation, with Barcelona eagerly waiting in the wings for a possible free transfer.

The Catalans’ hopes of signing Gundogan have taken a hit however after his agent told the British newspaper Guardian that the midfielder was not thinking about other clubs and would still be willing to listen to offers from his current club.

Speaking on behalf of his client, Gundogan’s agent said, “There’s definitely no agreement yet with any club. The focus of Ilkay in recent weeks was only on [Manchester] City, end of the season and the birth of his son,” before further affirming that “Where Ilkay plays next season is still open.”

Barcelona will keep trying, despite financial woes to sign the midfielder, and will wait patiently for the end of the season to see if they can reach a deal more favourable than Manchester City’s.
